Wednesday 26th May
Better start off by saying a big thank you to Team REME for letting us enter at such short notice. My ride hinged on Simon shoulder feeling better, which he injured breaking up a fight between competitors of all things, but I’ll leave that one for another day…just like the other four race reports that are already outstanding. Well I better cut to the chase before you‘ll doze off.
Terrible start as per usual, a huge dust cloud gets kicked up and there are riders fallen at the first corner, pity the helmet cam decided not to work at this point, though I doubt you would have seen much. What transpired next are possibly the worst two laps I have ever ridden, I had only forgotten how to ride sand that’s what it felt like, a bucket and spade would have proven more useful. Riding in the issuing dust the front tucked under at least twice, then I get rebounded into a tree pretty hard, blimey 1km down 5 to go.
Little later down the track I get stuck on a bank trying to push past some riders on one of the boggy bits, proved to be a real struggled to lever the now vertical WRF backwards. Hordes of Sportsmen went past making it tricky trying to overtake them when they are all line abreast with limited visibility.
By the time I broke into ‘clean air’ a few laps later sweat was streaming into my goggles so I got rid of them, stupid, stupid move. The fine brown dust found in the wooded sections was hard to cope with. Took me a long time to settle into a rhythm, Slab’s deep sand, whoops, ruts, hidden gullies mixed in with a bit of fatigue can have you on your arse at anytime. Si who retired because of his shoulder followed me for a lap and said I was riding smooth, which deciphers into slow LoL, sure felt that way when the fast boys go past.
What can I say? Another fine well organised event put on by Team REME, was nice to get some Slab practice before Carshalton’s timecard SEEC round there in a few weeks.
Tea Till Nearly Dark Round 2 Wednesday 9th June is at Broxhead Common a place I haven’t ridden at in maybe 12 years, should be a good’un so start thinking up excuses to skip work early.
Result: Overall 23rd, Class 6th (Vets).
Special thanks to Rich & Erika from Team Snapper for the photographs.
