PMCRC 5 Hour

28th June 2009

It has been a while since I have written anything so here’s something that I did not get round to do last year. The story begins way back in 09, PMCRC were planning on doing a 5 hour team event and I had been looking for a Hare & Hounds event I could enter young Mat Price with. I was still kind of feeling a little guilty that my WRF’s hydraulic clutch had broken on him leaving him stranded after only doing half a lap of BXDE 08. Another reason for writing this is Mat has shattered his knee cap just before Christmas (nasty).

The 5 hour was the perfect event to enter together, PMCRC are a great club and Woodberry if dry (rarity) is not that technically challenging to novice riders and with a short course length you could not ask for a better combination, sent the regs off and prayed for a dry sunny day just for Mat’s sake.

26/27 September Weavers Down

Been looking forward to the Natterjack for months especially as Si Beken was only starting a minute behind me, the plan was to ride together and not take it very seriously much like we did last year on Day 2, just riding round having a laugh, now I was carrying a injury my enthusiasm had wavered somewhat.

Left the bike preparation to my customary last minute taking Thursday off to make sure the bike was fettled to within an inch of its life. Replacing the head race bearings took hours and had to resort to grinding the lower ones out. The middle inlet valve needed another re-shim, can’t remember when I last did it but it must have been only a few months back, worrying to say the least. Had a bit of drama when the camshaft bearing holder fell into the engine, borrowing an extendable magnet from Si saved the day, otherwise it was going to be a engine out and upside down job.

SEEC Round 8 13th September 2009

With only six weeks having past since breaking my collar bone and two weeks left until the Natterjack BEC round, I thought it would be wise to get some saddle time and enter the Sidcup MCC Freestyle Husqvarna Enduro, all last minute of course. To be honest there was no real motivation having felt I had lost all my momentum plus the shoulder joint was still feeling sore.

Si Beken decided to give this one a miss meaning no Malcom Beken in the pits to keep me on the straight and narrow, even worse Aaron Smith had an accident on his scooter and was very lucky to get away with relatively minor injuries, still on crutches he withdrew his entry…get well soon mate!

Tea 'Til Nearly Dark Round 3

Wednesday 10th June 2009

With the Streatham SEEC round cancelled on Sunday meant that for the last round of the Team REME Tea Til Nearly Dark Wednesday evening series, I would be fresh as a daisy unlike the two previous rounds. I was really up for it specially that there been some rain because the last time we rode there it become a huge dust ball.

Pre-walked the first part of the track with the North Camp lot, once we had figured out in what direction you had to go off after the start straight. I think I did mentioned to Rob Mussell to be careful on some of the fire roads as they are deceivingly slippery, should have taken my own advice in foresight. Rob did have a very cool phone video of Chris Elderfield pancaking one of the jumps on the course at round 2; he must have been hitting it flat out to get that height.

SEEC Round 5 7th June 2009

Play TilgateDriving down towards Tilgate Forest there was no mistaking on what the terrain was going be like, my windscreen wipers struggling to cope with the shear amount of rain that was hitting the glass. Not that I mind riding Tilgate when it gets slippery and technical, I won the event couple of years back in exactly the same conditions on a YZ 125, in theory the Yamaha WRF 250 should be a better bike?

Walking round the short Special test most of the going consisted of grippy loamy soil not the slippery clay that covers most of Tilgate. Thanks to the mountain bikers a couple of areas were out of bounds included a large chunk of Tilgate's infamous hills, pity because that’s what made it that little bit special. No doubt the Carshalton club would make our lives more than interesting with the bits they could use, even the sun came out for them.

I was running late leaving work, been trying all morning to drink enough water to keep hydrated but it felt like I was on a losing battle, working in someone’s loft changing a tank in this heat you could count as inhumane torture, sweating more than I could drink…now there’s a lovely image.

Skipping my breakfast so I could finish early, first thing I did when I got home was wash the bike which was still dirty from Sunday’s gruelling P.M.C.R.C, 5 hour H & H. A quick change of rear wheel and a casual once over it was straight in the van, down the motorway for the 35 minute drive to Bagshot.

Line up

My third event in seven days and boy did my body know it. With just a few hours sleep under my belt it was time to load up the van pickup Jack and head of to Swanley in Kent, you could tell already that it’s was going to be a very hot day with a forecast 26 C high. I’m pretty sure that Sidcup must sacrifice a virgin or two because I have never done one of their events in the rain, this goes dating back to 1995. As I was doing the morning Over 40, 2 hour race, I wanted to arrive early to get the formalities over so I could select a decent place on the start line.

There’s nothing like taking the afternoon off from work to go racing. Team REME were organising a 3 event 2 hour Hare and Hound afternoon series called Tea ‘Til Nearly Dark, all were using Bagshot Test Track as the venue with proceeds going towards their ISDE fund.

After a very hard ride at Tilgate (waiting for results for report) and only 3 days to recover to say I was still “feeling it” is just a bit of an understatement, my calf’s and triceps still felt pumped and generally I was just worn down. A quick trip to the chemist to get some painkillers and a few hours later I felt at least I could sit on the bike without too much discomfort, did I mention my bum ached also?

Simon Beken picked me up nice and early so we could get a decent parking spot, you don’t want to arrive late and have to push the bike and pit gear miles. As the weather looked good down our neck of the woods I didn’t even bother to take a coat.

Play Special Test When we arrived Ray Kennard asked Si to park on the next fire road down and that he could turn round at the end, I jumped out and waited for Simon to come back. After about 15 minutes I started to wonder where he gone to and walked towards the crest, noticed how slippery the fire road was, didn’t take much guesswork to figure out what had happened. Graham Maulder come to the rescue and towed the van back up the hill in his 4x4.

SEEC Round 3

Was really looking forward to this one, we don’t usually have fast going in the SEEC but Blackwood has always delivered that high speed fix and you know what they say about variety being the spice of life. Kingston MCC have put on some very good Enduros at Blackwood and know the land intimately, with rumours of a 12 mile, half hour lap being touted in the internet forums. Just one small problem, on Saturday the WR 250F was being a pain and refusing to start on the button or the kickstart…this could all go very wrong.
